About Me

My professional training is in the area of Theoretical & Applied Linguistics, with a specialty in pedagogical methodologies for teaching French and Spanish at the secondary level. During my first year of teaching, it quickly became apparent that my students’ lack of English grammar fundamentals was getting in the way of their ability to truly master a foreign language. Action needed to be taken to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle. So this teacher of French and Spanish soon adopted an additional role – that of English grammar coach.

What I Offer

I help middle and high school students master the fundamentals of English grammar. I also lend support to students taking French or Spanish in school who need a boost to get them to the next level. Through customized drills and exercises, we are able to build “grammatical muscle memory” in all three languages. The ultimate goal is for students to feel more confident and in control of how they express themselves. Much as we might like, no one can escape good grammar, not even Julius Caesar. And that’s a good thing.

SAT & ACT

Since the 2016 SAT revamp, the approach to grammar is more contextual, closely resembling the ACT. In terms of grammatical concepts, there are only ten - twelve key concepts that need to be mastered for both tests. For example, you will have to learn to recognize when and how to use both coordinating and subordinating conjunctions in both sentence and paragraph contexts. This in turn requires a holistic reading of the sentence, the paragraph, and the passage as a whole. In addition, proper punctuation moves front and center in both tests. Are you comfortable with all of the uses for commas and semi colons? What about colons?

Grammar Muscle Memory

Is there a silver bullet to mastering a second language? Unfortunately, no. However, science has shown that by working your weaknesses with lots of repetition of new structures, you can improve. Much like Coolbrain below is strengthening his biceps at the gym! Don’t worry: it’s not all hard work and drills...fun awaits too.
